Traditional image upscaling — just stretching pixels — makes images blurry. AI upscalers use neural networks (Real-ESRGAN, SwinIR, and others) to intelligently reconstruct detail, producing upscaled images that look sharper than the original.

Most AI upscalers require uploading your images to a paid service. Our upscaler will run the AI model entirely in your browser using WebAssembly and WebGPU. The model file is downloaded once (around 50–100 MB) and cached after that.

When you'll need this

AI upscaling solves many problems:

  • Old photos. Bring low-resolution scans or early digital photos up to modern quality.
  • Web images for print. A 800px web image upscaled 4× becomes printable.
  • Recovering thumbnails. Sometimes the small version is all you have.
  • Game and art assets. Modernize pixel art or low-res game textures.
  • Product photography. Standardize image resolution across a catalog.
  • Screenshots for documentation. Make small UI captures crisp at full size.

Performance varies by device — modern laptops process images in a few seconds; phones take longer. We'll target 5 seconds per 1024px image on average hardware.

Private by design

Like everything else on pictoolkit, this tool will process your images entirely in your browser. No upload, no server-side processing, no temporary storage. Your files stay on your device.

While we finish this one, you can use any of our live tools — compress, convert, resize, HEIC to JPG, and our full format conversion suite are all available now.
